On June 16, 2009 AMP Gallery will present Community Approved an exhibition in the form of a temporary pop-up shop. With a nod to the Fluxus shop, Community Approved features books and ‘zines as well as limited edition sculptures, prints, drawings, records, accessories and clothing produced by over 30 artists and brands, primarily hailing from Downtown New York City. The exhibition title is a reference to this network of artists and creatives who, rather than simply make work that is only accessible to a collectors/patrons, also produce objects geared toward (and often in collaboration with) their peers.

Organized by Aaron (Aron the Downtown Don) Bondaroff and curated by Elizabeth Lovero, Community Approved features a large-scale exhibition design by architect Rafael de Cardenas. Cardenas, inspired by the Stevie Nicks music video “I Can’t Wait” has transformed the space into an endless staircase stacked with a rotating display of wares. In effect, the viewers become not only a shopper but also a part of the installation as they wander up and down the stairs to examine the works.

Much recent dialogue has drawn attention to the fluid nature of contemporary artistic practices’ that slip across media and discipline to utilize whatever best suits the idea or intent. Sidestepping big, bombastic projects and performances, Community Approved highlights artists’ working on the more intimate end of ephemeral practice. These individuals often make a virtue of necessity but not at the expense of quality or aesthetic. Instead, as old models of distribution/production struggle in the face of digital reproduction [see: major record labels and newspapers increasingly fragmented markets,[film studios and publishing houses] and loss of patrons [museums and galleries], the choice to self-publish and target an audience of one’s own peers is a logical one. There’s no need to rally against the mainstream when you can hear its death rattle.
