ReMap International Architectural Symposium & Workshops

Η γκαλερί The Breeder συμμετέχει στην διοργάνωση Remap 2 με δύο προσωπικές εκθέσεις των: Γιάννη Βαρελά και Lizzi Bougatsos.

Ο Γιάννης Βαρελάς παρουσιάζει στον κύριο εκθεσιακό χώρο της γκαλερί The Breeder τα χαρακτηριστικά κολάζ του με τις κολοσσιαίου μεγέθους ανθρώπινες μορφές. Στην έκθεση περιλαμβάνονται και τα έργα που παρουσιάστηκαν στην Μπιενάλε της Νέας Ορλεάνης, Prospect 1, σε επιμέλεια Dan Cameron. Ο τίτλος της έκθεσης “Blue Soldier - Opera Costume” αναφέρεται στη σύγχρονη ταξική δομή και την πάλη των τάξεων, όπως την πραγματεύεται ο Μαρσέλ Προυστ στο Αναζητώντας τον Χαμένο Χρόνο. Κάθε φιγούρα ή “κοστούμι” αντιπροσωπεύει τα ιδεολογικά όπλα που τόσες γενιές επαναστατικών καλλιτεχνών έχουν χρησιμοποιήσει για να ταυτοποιήσουν και να αμφισβητήσουν την κυρίαρχη πολιτιστική ταυτότητα.

Ο Γιάννης Βαρελάς είναι απόφοιτος του Royal College of Arts του Λονδίνου και ζει και εργάζεται μεταξύ Βιέννης και Αθήνας. Πρόσφατα έχει εκθέσει την δουλειά του μεταξύ άλλων στην έκθεση Skat Players σε επιμέλεια Sarah McCrory στην γκαλερί Vilma Gold, Λονδίνο και στην έκθεση Jekyll Island, σε επιμέλεια Max Henry στην γκαλερί Honor Fraser, Λος Άντζελες. Το 2007 συμμετείχε στην 1η Μπιενάλε της Αθήνας "Destroy Athens" σε επιμέλεια Ξένιας Καλπακτζόγλου, Poka Yio και Αυγουστίνου Ζενάκου.

Το playroom της γκαλερί The Breeder φιλοξενεί την πρώτη ατομική έκθεση στην Ευρώπη της Lizzy Bougatsos, η οποία είναι ελληνικής καταγωγής και ζει και εργάζεται στη Νέα Υόρκη. Tο γράψιμο, η περφόρμανς, η γλυπτική, το κολάζ και οι εγκαταστάσεις συνδυάζονται στην πολυμορφική πρακτική της Bougatsos. Πρώτες ύλες αλλά και έμπνευση για την δουλειά της αντλεί από τους δρόμους της Νέας Υόρκης αλλά και από πόλεις που επισκέπτεται με τις περιοδείες του συγκρότηματος Gang Gang Dance, του οποίου είναι η κύρια τραγουδίστρια. Στην έκθεσή της στο Playroom της γκαλερί The Breeder παρουσιάζει νέα γλυπτά και κολάζ.

Η Lizzy Bougatsos παρουσίασε πρόσφατα δουλειά της σε ομαδικές εκθέσεις, όπως: Station, επιμέλεια Shamim Momim και Nate Lowman, Μαϊάμι, στην έκθεση με έργα της συλλογής Astrup Fearnley, Astrup Fearnely Museet for Moderne Kunst, Όσλο, στην Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of America Art, Νέα Υόρκη, στην έκθεση In/Out of Me, επιμέλεια Klaus Biesenbach MACRO - Museo d'arte Contemporanea di Roma, Μιλάνο και Kunste Werke, Βερολίνο καθώς και σε ομαδικές εκθέσεις στο Swiss Institute, Νέα Υόρκη, στο Kunsthalle St. Gallen, ICA Philadelphia και στο P.S.1, Νέα Υόρκη.

The Breeder gallery is pleased to present as part of Remap 2, two individual solo exhibitions by Jannis Varelas and Lizzi Bougatsos.

Jannis Varelas takes over the gallery’s main space where he shows his trademark colossal human figures in mixed media collage. Included in the show are the works exhibited in the New Orleans Biennial Prospect 1 curated by Dan Cameron. The title of the show “Blue Soldier- Opera Costume” refers to contemporary class structure and struggle, viewed through the action of Marc Proust’s “In Search of a Lost Time”. Each figure or “costume” represents those ideological weapons that successive generations of dissident artists have used to identify and question cultural hegemony.

Jannis Varelas is a graduate of the Royal College of Arts in London and lives between Athens and Vienna. His works has been presented among others in the exhibition Skat Players, curated by Sarah McCrory in Vilma Gold Gallery in London and in the exhibition Jekyll island, curated by Max Henry in Honor Fraser gallery in Los Angeles. In 2007 he participated in the 1st Athens Biennial “Destroy Athens” which was curated by Xenia Kalpaktzoglou, Poka Yio and Augustine Zenakos.

The Breeder Playroom hosts the first solo exhibition in Europe of Greek origin-NY based artist Lizzi Bougatsos. Lizzi’s practise is multi-faceted as it includes and incorporates writing, performance, sculpture, collage and installation. Bougatsos searches her materials from the streets of New York city but also in cities that she visits while touring with Gang Gang Dance where she is the lead singer. In her show at The Breeder Playroom she will present new sculptures and collages.

Lizzi Bougatsos has recently presented her work in group exhibitions at; the Station (curated by Shamim Momim and Nate Lowman, Miami), in works from the Astrup Fearnley Collection, Astrup Fearnely Museet for Moderne Kunst, Oslo, in The Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of America Art, New York, in the exhibition In/Out of Me, curated by Klaus Biesenbach MACRO - Museo d'arte Contemporanea di Roma, Milan and Kunste Werke, Berlin and in group shows in Swiss Institute NY, Kunsthalle St. Gallen, ICA Philadelphia and P.S.1 NY.
