Exhibition duration: 10 – 30 June 2012
Opening hours: Wednesday – Friday: 17:00 – 20:00, Saturday: 12:00 – 18:00
Address: Leonidou 11, Metaxourgio, Athens 104 37
Opening night: Thursday 10 May at 20:00This exhibition by Katerina Kana forms an epilogue to the three-week performance that formed part of ReMap 3, in the autumn of 2011.
Visitors were invited to be photographed in an autonomous studio space that functioned as a type of automated photo-booth, and could then watch as their portraits were manipulated by the artist in real time. A process of successive print outs and collaging by hand distorts the original images and allows for the contortive accentuation or concealment of the characteristics that constitute the photographic record of a face. In this way, Katerina Kana creates experiential reconstructions of the faces being depicted.
The symbolic destruction of the original photographs – sliced by scissors – and their reconstruction on old film posters as backgrounds, many of which become obscured in the process, creates a kind of personal survey of the human landscape. With their kaleidoscopic perspective, these “meta-portraits” by Kana form a kind of subjective documentation of the people around her, casting a different light on those who entered her environment.
These portraits, presented here in the form of a large collage, are unique works – they are no longer simple reproductions, no longer just print-outs. The exhibition space, which was also the studio space in which the works were created, introduces the visitors themselved into this process of “human infusion”.
