The Journal Gallery is pleased to present Copper Kettle a group exhibition featuring works by four Brooklyn-based artists: Sarah Braman, Chris Martin, Daniel Turner and Michael Williams.
From scraps of discarded cardboard and scavenged wood to spray paint and tar, the artists in the Copper Kettle employ unorthodox materials to explore new vocabularies for gesture and medium. Direct responses to the raw materials at hand, these works transform everyday objects into tactile and expressive abstract paintings and sculptures.
Copper Kettle showcases four distinct approaches that share a common spirit and an immediacy of expression. Embracing and monumentalizing often overlooked materials, the artists in Copper Kettle bridge the gap between decay and endurance, trash and transcendence
Born in Tonawanda, NY, Sarah Braman now lives and works in New York and Amherst, MA. Her work has been exhibited in group shows nationally and internationally including the Lisbon Biennial in Portugal; “ON AND ON AND ON” at Galerie Parisa Kind, Frankfurt, Germany; “The Shape of Things to Come: New Sculpture” at Saatchi Gallery, London, UK and “One Dozen Paintings” and “Salad Days” at The Journal Gallery, Brooklyn, NY. Braman’s solo exhibitions include “Lay Me Down” at MACRO, Rome, Italy; “Indian Summer” at Le Confort Moderne, France and “April Trip” at Museum 52, New York, NY.
