The exhibition explores the profound life of the objects as ‘copies’ and as ‘desiring machines’, investigating the mutations of history through the notion of luxury and through methods of private and public display.
The sculptural nature of the show is structured upon the progressively fragmented seriality of two distinct photographic archives.Rallou Panagiotou elevates part of the photographic work by her grandfather, Ioannis Papakonstantinou (b. Alexandria, Egypt 1920, d. Athens, Greece 2003), of his own engineering work across postwar Greece, to a linear archival flow which creates a formal ‘horizon’ to the sculptural ‘ground’ of the exhibition space.
The photographic archive of bridges, aqueducts and building sites sets tone to another elliptic photographic archive of ‘objects-copies’ idiosyncratically selected due to their experiential value.
This subsequent archive is mutated into a landscape of sculptures which suggest the experiential value and the physical understanding of each ‘object-copy’.
The multiple recollection of objects through archives and sculpture informs a study on the seriality and deviation of the portrait.Rallou Panagiotou (b. Athens, 1978) is a Greek artist based in Glasgow. She pursued her studies at Athens School of Fine Art and Glasgow School of Art. Solo shows include ‘Exaggerate the Classics’, IBID Projects, London (2010), ‘Heavy Make-Up’, AMP, Athens (2010) and ‘4×4: Rallou Panagiotou’, Transmission Gallery, Glasgow (2009).
