Museum Copies is a project by Stelios Karamanolis and Tula Plumi in accordance with the archaeological character of the Kerameikos-Metaxourgeio district.
The project focuses on the essence of the museum copy in relation to the procedure of its reproduction and with reference to the original ancient discovery.
Karamanolis and Plumi present artworks that are based on the axis authentic object- cast- museum copy, concentrating on the ancient Greek sculpture.
Individual artworks are combined with selected materials taken from the Karamanolis workshop, a workshop specializing in the reproduction of authentic bronze, terracotta, stone and marble museum copies since 1965.The two artists’ present parts of the Karamanolis workshop such as plaster casts, multiple copies and works in progress.
The project aims at exploring the relationship between scientific research and the values of the market. The copy is a practical consuming object which offers variation and repetition. On the other hand the real object is confined to the museum and becomes a subject of study and research.
